Start and Finish

It is probably true that there are two types of people, starters and finishers.

Neither are more important than the other and neither are more valuable that the other. In fact there are many organisations, particularly entrepreneurial businesses, that are populated by starters which is probably where the phrase 'vision without action is a daydream and action without vision is a nightmare' comes from.

I am definitely a starter, I love to see the start of projects and ideas and get things going but I don't have the resilience or the fortitude to get them done. I need finishers.

My wife is an amazing finisher and that's one of the reasons our relationship works so well. At work I need to begin to surround myself with more and more finishers. We have a great group of starters at work but as we build the team further we probably need some people who are able to come in an bash off the lists for us and take great pleasure in completed things.

It's the essential dynamic of building a team and the essential process of putting the right people in the right places and understanding that neither are more valuable than the other.
