Black Box Heaven?

The ‘happy people’… that’s what my wife and my wife’s Aunt Diane calls them. The people Shaun (Alison’s Uncle and The Campbell Academy Manager Tom’s Dad) go to see in London from time to time for inspiration.

Shaun is a company CEO and I am a dentist but many years ago we started to take day trips to London to see speakers at the London Business Forum. They were always half a day and we would always do something else for the rest of the day that we wouldn’t have done before – go to the National Gallery, see the Lord of The Rings stage show and many other things. Inspirational days. To name but a few we saw Bob Geldof, Edward de Bono, Rachel Stevens (the one who climbed the seven highest peaks in the world, not the one from S Club 7!) and some short months before London 2012 Chris Hoy who I even had the opportunity to speak to afterwards and reminisce about being a Scotsman in England.

But the happy people we only got for 2.5 hours in an Imax cinema at the O2. Never did I think I’d get the chance to have one of the ‘happy people’ to myself.

And so, thanks to Gregor and a serendipitous contact I got to chat to the people who represent Matthew Syed. For those of you who don’t know about Matthew Syed, here and here are a couple of blogs about his books. Not only did Black Box Thinking change the way I think about things, it changed the way we did things at the practice and it spawned The Failure Conference.

So the idea is this…we get two days with Syed in Nottingham and we get to set the agenda. He does ‘The Talent Myth’ but more important than that, he does learning from failure. This will not appeal to many but it will appeal to some. It will be 20 people or less and probably 5 of those will be from the clinic. There will be 15 places. Including VAT it’s likely to cost £1,500 for two days. What I need now is anybody who may be interested so I can see whether it’s feasible.

It might be a crazy idea but if you think you’d like to come (likely to be first half of next year) just email me back and say you’re interested so we can get an idea of numbers.
