Accepting

Getting old (53 is officially old), one has to accept that you cannot do what you used to do to the same quantity or even the same intensity.

For years, people have told me that every 5 years there's a watershed, and so now I've had many watersheds.

I've also dealt with health issues, too, hypothyroid, chronic fatigue, knee injuries, all sorts, stuff that inevitably slows me down, makes me unlikely to run a 5k race under 20 minutes anymore.

And so, there are two ways you can approach that, isn't there?

You can rail against it, you can rage against the machine, you can refuse to go quietly into that dark night and they are all good and there is a time and a place but there's also a bit of acceptance of the fact that just because you can't go as hard and just because you can't go as fast doesn't mean you can't go as well.

Age and treachery will overcome youth and exuberance all the time. I have so many shortcuts that young people don't know about, it's staggering. I don't have to work 120 hours a week to get 120 hours of value (I have worked 120 hours a week before).

The quicker we get to acceptance, the faster we can decide not to go quietly into that dark night.
