It was Tuesday morning, and I was getting ready to go to Vietnam, and then my mother-in-law phoned.
She's not really on the internet so much; she was watching the news, or maybe she'd heard something on the radio, but she'd been told that Heathrow Airport was closed because of flooding and thunderstorms.
I was flying from Heathrow later that day.
For a moment I thought that the Vietnam trip might be cancelled, and there was that part of me which was delighted.
5 days off, unplanned, unscheduled- what would I do with that?
And so I wrote a list, and the list is below, and then the punch line is below that.
What would I do with the unplanned 5 days off?
- Eat really well
- Early to bed and sleep well
- No drinking (alcohol)
- Three long bike rides
- Two gym sessions
- Two stretching sessions
- Lunchtime walks with my wife in the sun
- Golf with my son
- Out for tea with my family one night
- Planning the house renovations
- Lecture writing for the further trips in the year
- Dog walking in the early mornings
- Reading
Those were the few things that I thought I would fill up the days with, and then I thought…
…. Why am I not filling up my days with that anyway?
Perspective changes are interesting: if you were gonna die a year from now, how would you spend your time?
