27. Hiding in Plain Sight - published 02.09.2013

This was a pre-curser for what was going to come next, where I would find my voice and talk about thing that were actually wrong and enter into conversations with people about how to fix those things.

Sadly, as I write this there are still many many people who would be able to wear the badge of 'hiding in plain sight'.

I think i'll do this thing again then.

I must attribute the term 'hiding in plain sight' to my friend and colleague from Spring Grove Dental Clinic in Glasgow, David Cunningham. He introduced this to me earlier this year and the concept has stayed with me ever since.

The classic example of 'hiding in plain sight' is Jimmy Saville or Lance Armstrong or Rolf Harris. These are people that existed at the very top of their profession and seemed to be untouchable, protected within a bubble of a reputation that they had created themselves. Press releases and media profiles would have us all believe (and did have us all believe) that they were almost invincible in their own sphere, the good guys, the untouchables, the heroes, the ones to look up to.

It strikes me, as I look around my profession, that there are dozens and dozens of people like this 'hiding in plain sight'

Not that I am brave enough or my spine is thick enough to mention people in a blog like this but I would ask all of you guys who cherish honesty, integrity and respect to look around and scratch the surface of many of our professional leaders to see whether they actually walk their talk.

It is my belief that we are living in a profession bereft of authentic leadership where many (not all but the majority) are simply not authentic.

I watch peoples profiles plastered over the media in dentistry, many of which I simply know are false. So I would call out to you guys to stand up for integrity, honesty and reality. Fly your flag because I will follow that flag. I will come to you. I will join your tribe and I will follow your leadership.
