Can’t or won’t?

Ask this question next time you encounter someone you work for or love or spend time with, when you’ve asked them to do something and it doesn’t happen, is it because they can’t do it or because they won’t do it?

It is really important to get to the bottom of this, particularly in your business. If they refuse to do it then that is a problem but if they can’t do it then it is essential to train them.

There was a discussion the other day where someone suggested to me that one of my dentists is unable to clean the bracket table after a patient has been in if people are in a real hurry because they can’t do it. I would suggest that the real answer to that is that they won’t do it and feels it is beneath them.

It might be worth examining your own attitudes to the things that you don’t do to understand whether you can’t or won’t.
