To any Glaswegian the opportunity to get away from the cold and rain of May and head to sunshine of Monaco is an easy one to take.

Osteology 2013 represented the 10th Anniversary of the Congress in the amazing setting of the Grimaldi Forum in Monte Carlo.  The programme always appealed to me with a top line up of keynote speakers and inspiring subjects.  Concurrent Scientific Forums allowed delegates to jump between two auditoria – excellent acoustics and visuals.

Speakers from the ITI were prominent.  Of particular interest to me Danny Buser presented a GBR procedure in 3D (a new congress experience for me) but, perhaps more importantly, added scientific data providing both radiographic (CBCT) and histological evidence for simultaneous GBR with delayed implant placements  Shakeel Shadad displayed a beautifully presented poster showing further radiographic evidence for GBR, cited by Professor Buser in his presentation.

ITI Member Khalid Malik presented a poster on the use of xenografts in genioplasty.

Professor Donos, fresh over from ADI, delivered a key presentation on Diabetes in Implantology.

I particularly enjoyed the morning of the second day and the focus on peri-implantitis.  Professor Mombelli, of Geneva University, clarified the current position of the disease as far as definitions and diagnosis applies.

Giovanni Salvi, of the University of Bern, delivered a clear and detailed description on surgical and non-surgical interventions based upon the findings of the Consensus Conference.  This was followed by further presentations by Lisa Heitz-Mayfield, on the prevention of the disease, and by Frank Schwarz on surface decontamination.  Stephen Chen rounded off the meeting with a Case Presentation and discussion..

On a personal level the highlight was the afternoon of the first day and the poster presentations of their research by six delegates to a panel of Frank Schwarz, Isabella Rocchietta, and Michael Bornstein.  It was fantastic to watch colleagues display their magnificent talents and reveal the true integrity of their work.

This was a really outstanding Conference – very stimulating, thought provoking, and with much of the content centred on ITI protocols and consensus.  And if you like nice cars it is a pretty cool place too…
