Fomo

Fomo = fear of missing out

I first saw it on Seth Godins blog but I am sure someone else invented it. This is a condition which is rife throughout dentistry and can be seen by people who are desperate to be millionaires, copying any seemingly good idea they see which might get them ‘the next big thing’

It is quite a staggering thing to watch as you observe people in dentistry who will buy really expensive capital equipment or instigate procedures into their practice that they may not be properly trained to perform because they feel as if they are missing out if they don’t. It is not a considered approach but it is certainly something that I have been really guilty of previously. Not just in dentistry but in other aspects of my life.

The real contented individual would be free from such influences and be able to consider a path towards excellence and mastery in one or a few small areas and proceed in a contented way towards that.

Fomo is destructive, it distracts and deflects from the true course and should be avoided at all times.
