Introduction

As implant dentistry grows as a clinical discipline provided for patients in the UK, the number of courses and opportunities to begin a career in implant dentistry expands enormously.

Sadly, for many people, this involves attending a short (from months to one year) straightforward implant course which gives you a sound foundation of knowledge in implant dentistry but limited practical skills or practical experience of work at the cutting edge.

For many people (and the statistics do tend to back this up to a high degree) returning back to practice to provide implant dentistry in an unsupported and unguided way is terrifying and logistically difficult, therefore leading to a disincentive for the provision of treatment at all.

We know from statistics provided by the implant companies that many practitioners halt at that stage, providing a small amount of implant treatments per year, but not having the confidence or support to provide larger, more advanced work due to fear and the perceived risk of backlash and litigation.

This short eBook is designed to show practitioners in that situation a way forward, a way to improve your skills and improve your understanding of implant dentistry to be able to provide more advanced cases within your own environment to help your patients further.

Who is it For?

Some years ago, Straumann dental implant company provided some figures to The Campbell Academy to show that over 90% of delegates who attended surgical based implant courses were not placing dental implants 2 years after the course.

Together with this, Straumann also showed that the vast majority of their customers placed 15 dental implants a year or less, despite having invested heavily in education, equipment and staff training.

At The Campbell Academy, we felt we needed to offer a solution to these practitioners to allow them to move on with their implant dental treatment to a situation where they can place 50 dental implants and more per year developing their practice, and developing their understanding of the discipline of implant dentistry.

To do this would make implant dentistry more financially viable within individual practices, it would allow investment in kit, education and team training, not to mention the increased cost in indemnity. It would allow for a more fulfilling and satisfying clinical practice which could reinvigorate the careers of practitioners who found themselves ‘stuck in rut’.

Glass Ceilings and Hammers

This is the classic situation of hitting against a glass ceiling. The 15 implants per year providing straightforward implants is a huge glass ceiling which seems impossible to break through for many practitioners, but the way to do this is through guided education, mentoring and reflection of cases carried out.

With The Campbell Academy framework, The Year Two Implant course provides an extension from straightforward implant dentistry into more complex procedures. The advanced and complex procedures themselves are one thing, but the advanced and complex surgical skills that can be obtained, together with the understanding of treatment planning and the ability to share the burden of case planning with mentors and colleagues allows people to move their practice forwards to provide more implants for patients in a safe environment within their own capabilities.

This is in fact the essence of ‘enhanced CPD’ where a personal development profile identifies the areas needed to work on and then modular course work can be undertaken to improve those areas.

At the present time, The Campbell Academy Year Two Implant Course offers a range of modules from some of

the following courses:

  • Aesthetic Implant Live Skills
  • Sinus Grafting Live Skills
  • Full Arch Implant Live Skills
  • CBCT Masterclasses
  • Masterclasses in hard and soft tissues management

And many other subjects.

The Joy of Collaboration

As at least as important as the theoretical and practical teaching of implant dentistry is the ability to collaborate and learn with peers.

To join a tribe of people who have the same ethos and philosophy, and to grow together by sharing cases, positive and negative experiences and progression is one of the most exciting parts of educating in implant dentistry.

At The Campbell Academy, we have developed a sophisticated online discussion platform which is safe, closed and allows open discussion of complications and issues so that everyone can learn from the group and the bulk of experience.

This combined with mentoring and the practical teaching allows individuals to move from a straightforward platform of implant dentistry into cases of an advanced nature and finally towards complex treatment provision.

Mentoring

Many people believe that mentoring only exists for the first few dental implant cases before it is cast adrift and you have to learn ‘on your own’.

Nothing could be further from the truth. All the excellent and brilliant clinicians I have worked with in the past have had some form of mentoring arrangement in place to discuss cases and to seek advice from clinicians who have more experience or equally as much experience in these areas as they do.

The Campbell Academy has a sophisticated structure of mentoring, and a network of national mentors in place to assist delegates in moving forwards with their clinical practice and developing a skill.

Who is it For and How to do it?

For individuals who are stuck in a safe but non-challenging situation in their implant dental career where they’re able to place a few dental implants per year but are held back in developing their skills to provide more advanced and complex treatments for their patients, the modular approach for treatment at The Campbell Academy offers an extension of year 1 into year 2 and masterclasses and may be the ideal opportunity for you.

This could be for:

  1. Young practitioners who have started their implant career recently and wish to move forwards as quickly as possible to get to a level of competency in more advanced cases.
  2. Experienced practitioners who have been placing implants for some time but feel that they can’t break out of the straightforward implant provision model and wish to progress to more advanced and complex treatments.
  3. This may also be for people who wish to update or reinforce their skills in areas for which they have been working on for some time, but have found themselves in areas where they have had no structured training and have ‘learned on the job’.
