The main human resources secret to being a successful entrepreneurial businessperson is learning and practising the art of effective delegation.

Effective delegation is critically important, and it involves two words. The second word is delegation, which is entirely different to abdication.

Abdication is where you give things away without paying any attention to them or who does them or how they're done or what the outcomes are, just to get them off your plate and out of sight. That is a fast road to disaster.

Delegation is when you empower someone to do the work that you were doing, perhaps differently, perhaps better, and certainly relieving the stress from you to do other work.

Effective delegation is to give that to someone who is capable, who is inspired, and who is empowered. The most important part of delegation, though, is to understand that you are not delegating tasks; you are delegating decisions.

The person whom you empower and entrust with the portfolio that you have given, you should have the authority to make the appropriate decisions on a day-to-day basis to do the work that is required within the framework of the values and vision of your business.

That's the secret of delegation: ‘I'd rather you ask for forgiveness than permission. ’ If you do the thing that I've asked you to do, in a way that you think is right and to the best of your ability, I will never be upset if it doesn't go right, because it probably wouldn't have gone right for me.

Learn to do that properly, effectively, and then you are really building a business.
