3 Years From Now

In a super insightful video short that I saw of Jeff Bezos the other day (not necessarily my favourite individual, but definitely someone to learn from in some respects), he talks about the 3-year vision.

One of the things he discussed in this little, short video was how people will congratulate him for his performance at the end of the current quarter, and he will, he will say to them, “We baked that quarter 3 years ago”.

He discussed how the job of the senior executives in his business was to live in the future and to see what the future will be.

An interesting concept and perhaps one that's not open full time to any of us who don't work at the higher end of Amazon or other companies, but that doesn't mean that we cannot spend a tiny little bit of our time living like a senior executive in a large business.

It's not even a choice; it's a must; it's an imperative.

Part of the role of someone who chooses to lead a business (whatever size, however big or small) is taking the responsibility to look forward and understand.

For those of you who have followed the movements of what has happened in The Campbell Academy over the past 6 to 8 months, you'll understand that in April we bought professional coaching services (Chris Barrow's business), and have merged together with Extreme Business and The Campbell Academy Business Education to form something very special, which is now moving forward at pace.

We're in complete agreement that the fundamental basis for the future coaching of dental business and business education is no longer to ‘coach in crisis’; it is to step back and to help people build a plan for the next 3 years of their business cycle.

Coaching is to allow people to execute their plan, not to live in crisis.

The first part of this is to have a plan, and it's possible to learn how to build a plan (I did, we did, and we do). Once you have a robust plan that has been well constructed, there is very little reason ever to change your plan (see COVID for examples of why).

The decision to change your plan or parts of your plan during your three-year cycle would be something that you would discuss in your coaching environment, whatever that environment was.

If you write the plan and execute the plan, your business will almost certainly be much better than it was before you started, because only 10% of the businesses in the world either write a plan or execute the plan they've written.

The only other part of this, which is your responsibility, is to see the future, but it's much more; you're much more likely to see the future as a group than you are as an individual.

Crowdsourcing information is a thing; it is a real thing, and generally it is a good thing.

For that, a coaching community like the one that we have created and are further building now would give you the opportunity to live in a world where you could frame people's visions of the future against your vision of the future and your values.

If you were able to do this, you would almost certainly be extraordinarily more successful 3 years from now.

Whatever the investment was for that, it would be worth it, not just financially, but for peace of mind, happiness, stability and success.
