We moved into a new house in April of this year, so we’re heading towards six months.
It’s a totally different thing to that we had before and the space around it is enormous.
I don’t really know how to deal with that type of space. I don’t have any experience of what to do with it.
I don’t have a network of people that can help.
I don’t have an understanding of the timings, the schedule or the structure of what’s required.
I do have a Charlie though.
When Alison and I met Charlie, he was working part-time in Morrisons, stacking shelves and working the tills. He had a life of working in the countryside in various different guises and different jobs, but he had retired and was trying to earn some money just working in Morrisons.
He decided to do some gardening and his wife, Norma who also recently retired was working in the baker’s shop.
They are both extraordinary, outdoor people. They understand the countryside, they understand flowers, plants, farming, agriculture, all sorts of things.
They have a huge network of people in that world who understand the broader base of everything else.
Charlie sees the project at our place as an extraordinary opportunity to do stuff that he loves and is helping more and more and more after transforming the garden at our previous house into the most wonderful place over about 10 years.
We were laughing the other day as Alison said “I’ve told Charlie he’s my outside PA”
Both Rosie and I agreed that he’s not an ‘outside PA’ he’s an Estate Manager (even though our ‘estate’ is tiny)
Charlie needs freedom. He needs the opportunity to ‘ask for forgiveness, not for permission’
He needs a budget that he knows he can spend.
He needs to know that he has permission to bring in other people who have expertise in other areas to help us to get things the way we’d like.
We have the vision of what we’d like to do if possible.
Charlie is the expert that brings it together.
Sometimes we all need an expert in various aspects of our lives.
If we’re lucky, sometimes we get to be the expert.
