Something about the Mustangs

Written by Colin Campbell | 07/05/22 17:00

It’s been ages since I blogged about Callum’s football team that I’ve coached since the boys were 7.

We’ve been through some ups and downs, some tough times and some better times.

We finished 3rd in the league on 3 occasions and been to 3 presentations for this.

We’ve won the cup in a penalty shootout after a 0-0 game in boys’ football where we were 3-0 down in the penalties!

On Sunday we’re in the semi-final of the cup again.

We have play offs for 2nd place to come but the main focus is tomorrow’s game to get our day out in the sun.

The difficult things about running a team in boys’ football are the same as the difficult things about running a team in anything.

The Mustangs has always been a metaphor for my professional career which has always been a metaphor for life.

In Thursday training two of the boys just didn’t turn up because their mums and dads didn’t think it was really that important for them to turn up on a Thursday which was 2 days before a cup semi-final which could inevitably give them some of the best memories of their life to date.

In the first instance that’s frustrating but then you realise that there are 14 boys who do turn up and you pay attention to them.

In all teams there are always people who are winning and people who are losing and people who are coasting.

Sometimes the winners become losers, the losers become winners and the coasters go in either direction.

That’s what it’s like building a team.

I’m nervous and I’m not sure which way it will go.

In the end I think they’ll come together on Sunday.
