One and a quarter million words

Written by Colin Campbell | 24/10/18 17:00

I passed 1800 blogs this week. It was China Part Two – the road from Wuhan.

It was one of the best ones I’ve ever done because I read it back.

It was only one of the best ones I’ve ever done to me because I was there and it takes me back to where I was. Maybe I don’t describe it well enough for other people but I describe it well enough for me.

I said at the start, and it’s often really important to remind myself, that the blog is to me, for me and for later.

I am delighted to have anybody along who likes to read it, but it has to be for me otherwise it loses all of its authenticity and becomes just a humble bragging stream of utter and unadulterated s**t.

I reckon that there’s probably 700 words in each blog (on average) and 1800 means there’s about one and a quarter million words gone down already.

I am less than 200 blogs away from 2000 and less than 8200 away from 10000. I have now even forgotten when I started to write them… 2011?

Throughout the process of doing them I have lost my way and used it in the wrong direction to chase things at times (particularly after the ‘success’ of the GDC blogs) but those days are passed and it won’t go viral again (didn’t really go viral then)

Some guys stick with it I think and lots of people don’t but that’s all good and cool.

I used to write about the books that I read and then I stopped but I am going to start doing that again because I want to remind myself of what I read and how it affected me. When I have no ability to write them anymore then I hope I’ll still have the ability to read them.

I’m quite pleased with the one and a quarter million words thing because I think that that’s how things get done. It’s a body of work and it’s out there and I’m super proud of it.

If something happened to me tomorrow then my kids could read it and maybe that would be the stimulus they would need to do that. I guess that’s probably good enough for me.

If you’ve taken the time to read it or to recommend it to someone, to enjoy it or to comment, I can’t tell you how grateful I am. If you did that then I hope you’ll carry on.

You can also get the crazy stream of consciousness now through the podcast with Shaun and I. The link to that is here.

Little by little, bit by bit, people begin to understand that I am what I say I am.

I’m just trying to connect and stay curious and enjoy the journey. It’s better if you share that with other people and I’m glad that you share it with me.

Thank you.
