Yesterday was our charity ball, full report later when everyone’s head settles down.
That was the seventh time we’ve done that and for years we’ve been giving 1% of our turnover to good causes and seemingly making no difference to the world at all.
A very conservative estimate at how much we’ve been able to raise through our charity causes would be £250,000 but it’s tons more than that.
Pretty much all of that came out of the business and so from my point of view I could have bought a really nice thing for that or many smaller really nice things if I put my mind to it.
And so, how come we’re not making a difference?
The problem is that there are too many problems to fix and so, when you open the world up and see all that you think is bad, the task is unmanageable.
We’re now, as part of our strategic cycle, in a position to start to reappraise who gets the money from us and why and we have a process for doing that and we go into that process now.
And so, as a group of people at the practice who donate an extraordinary sum of money year on year to good causes and social legacy projects we have to decide where not to give the money to.
That feels a little bit devastating and hugely uncomfortable but what we must understand is that what we can do is what we can do.
I hope that our project for 1% for social legacy which has ran now for almost a decade has inspired other people to do that, to help their own people and their own causes and the things that are close to their hearts.
Maybe it hasn’t but we’ve tried, and we’ve been able to help people that are close to our hearts as a group.
Our view of the world might change and the people we help might alter but all we can do is our bit, and it will never, ever, be enough to save the world unless, just unless, we all do our bit.
