Measured self abuse

How much are you prepared to hurt yourself to achieve something more, to break through your ceiling or to get to a better place?

The threshold is different for all of us and the reason for hurting ourselves to make progress is a very personal one.

I’m not talking about when things have to be done; I’m talking about when you’re choosing to try to move to a better place even though the position you’re in is reasonable to start with.

This happens to athletes as they train, parents as they try to help their children develop or people in a job that they care about.

Sometimes it’s important to flog yourself on a bike, to stay up all night or work ‘too hard’ to move things along and get yourself to somewhere you haven’t been before.

Nobody that you admire, nobody that you look up to, nobody you think has achieved ‘success’ has ever done so without deliberately hurting themselves to get there.

Life is entirely a question of balance and a balance that none of us is ever likely to strike properly, certainly for no length of time.

At some point it will be past the time for me to hurt myself to get to a better place.

I just haven’t reached that point yet.

Regardless of how I feel sometimes, I don’t even think I’m close.
