Jacob's Picture

Written by Colin Campbell | 25/08/23 17:00

I have two nephews who live close to us.

Oscar is six, and Jacob is 3 ½.

Jacob was at our house last Monday for two hours while Alison and the girls looked after him while his Mum and brother were elsewhere.

I got a text from Alison at five o'clock saying, "If you can get home by 17:30, Jacob has a picture for you".

I packed everything I was doing, left, and got there at 17:25.

Jacob had painted a picture for me (well drawn with felt tip pens) before he even came to the house.

It was me and two aeroplanes, it's beautiful.

I asked him if I could take it to work and put it on my notice board, and he said no, I had to put it up at home.

It came off the back of the day when I'd been listening to music while riding the bike in the shed that morning.

In my meandering search of music, I ended up on The Waterboys again.

I ended up on The Waterboys cover of a Van Morrison song 'Sweet Thing'.

I was watching the lyrics come up on my phone while I was writing (I like to do that to see what they actually wrote), and there is that bit in that song by Van Morrison where it says, "And I will never grow so old again".

I think I spent the last few years unconsciously growing a little bit older and forgetting that I am a devotee of Frank Turner and will never grow up.

It's time for me to stop growing up and stop thinking about what I will do when I grow up.

I have no idea what I will do then, and I love that.

I was trying to finish my lectures for South Africa, and I shut them and left the practice and went to see Jacob and received my picture, which is very precious.
