A few days ago, I wrote a piece about GPT-3.
I first heard about it at the start of December and Andy and I discussed it at work in about the middle of December.
I read some blog posts from Seth Godin and investigated the site for Openai which you can look at here and the GPT-3 site which is here.
I decided to go back on again to have a play around after another Seth Godin blog today (10th January).
Seth was explaining why high schools in New York have decided to try to ban GPT-3 already even though it's only been in existence for about eight weeks.
And so, I decided to have a little play around after the discussion with my daughter about her flatmate who's written his essay using it and the suggestion to my daughter that she considers playing about with it before her online open book exams and I wrote an essay with 500 words on ‘a comparison of Straumann dental implant surfaces’.
The text was pretty good and the English language that was written was much better than I can do.
With my depth of knowledge of implant surfaces and in particular in the Straumann system, I could probably write better than that but remember that this is the eye and almost certainly the next time I write it, it will be better again and the time after that it will be better than me.
This does change everything and really quite quickly.
Very soon now writing an essay as a summative assessment in education will be a waste of time and so, we have to think of other ways to teach and other ways to learn.
How we used to use the basic as simple as possible for the educator filters to test for acquired knowledge are gone and as Seth says in his blog, it's only the difference between a computer keyboard replacing a pen.
It will just make a massive difference and the people who embrace it will move forwards and win and the people who don't will not.
It is the future of education, but only because it's the future of everything else.
Good luck exploring your GPT-3, the playground is here.
You can even speak into it if you want, see what you can do.
