Wrestling with pigs...

Written by Colin | 08/11/16 18:00

Many years ago my friend, mentor and coach Chris Barrow taught me lessons in life with one of his favourite sayings "Don't wrestle with pigs in sh*t, sh*t stinks and the pigs love it"

So I blog about this recent article in the Daily Mail.

There is a simple solution to this, do not get into wrestling.

I watched with amusement as dentistry went mental on Facebook (and I don't watch Facebook a lot) regarding this article. People shouting, posting and getting all upset with the Daily Mail.

The Daily Mail are the pigs and the society that reads it are the sh*t.

The answer is absolutely simple... dentistry is not a commodity. Despite parts of the profession attempting to commoditise it by driving prices downwards, it's not a commodity, it's a range or products.

Dentistry is not tins of baked beans, it's TV sets. I have talked about this before and i'll talk about it until i'm blue in the face; you can get a TV for £50, you can get a TV for £5000 and any price in between. Choose the service, choose the product, decide what you want to spend and go. Nobody will shout at you if you charge £50 for a TV or if you charge £5000, the market is established and clear.

To pretend that a dental check up for £20 is exactly the same as a specialist consultation for £180 is absolute nonsense. When you're confronted by the arguments that the Daily Mail give you respond with intelligence and integrity and the answer to this is commoditisation (incidentally hair cuts are a good way to describe this also)
