A year in an instant

The Mustangs... my football team.

This group of boys, who I have coached since they were eight, are now starting to turn eleven.

It’s our fourth year of football together and we’ve all learned more about football than any of us would probably care to admit.

Last week though, at the game on Sunday, we drew 1 – 1.

We play in the Third Division on a Sunday and we were playing a team coming down from Division One because they’ve lost a couple of players.

This was the team that smashed us two years ago in a summer tournament when we had just started to play 7-a-side football (we are now 9-a-side)

But in an instant, in one part of the game in the middle, I saw the boys a year ago and I saw them today.

It’s almost like your life flashed before you, like one of those old-fashioned movies in black and white.

It’s gone. That year is gone.

They’re all about three foot bigger, 2,000 times better and in every game now they need less and less from me as they step up and grow up and rely on each other and move on.

I’ve got four years after this and they’ll be gone. I’ll be devastated as I lose the chance to coach a boys football team that I never for a minute wanted or thought I would get.

That instant where I saw a year flash past me was a really important reminder to enjoy every single raindrop that I stand under tomorrow when we play another game.
