A lesson in how to say sorry

A few pointers for when you inevitably find a situation in which you have to apologise.

All of us find this situation often.

Not all of us are very good at carrying out the inevitable ‘deed that needs to be done’

  1. Sit in a quiet place one to one.
  1. Look the person in the face.
  1. Say sorry.
  1. Don’t say “Sorry, but…” Don’t say “Sorry, and…” Don’t say anything else apart from “Sorry”.
  1. It’s fine to elaborate later when the full extent of what you’re saying to the person has sunk in, but first of all let them realise that you’re sorry without conditions.
  1. It’s often really helpful to tell the person you’re saying sorry to that you understand how you made them feel and that you’ll try not to make them feel like that again.

Making mistakes is an opportunity to learn and upsetting people can become an opportunity for them to show how much you think of them, what you feel about them and how you’re prepared to eat humble pie and apologise properly (see above)

It can turn a really negative situation into something quite special.
